A Perfect Day Trip Near Seoul: Suwon Hwaseong & Haenggung-dong Travel Course 🏯

🚆 How to Get from Seoul to Suwon

I went by car, but Suwon is also a very accessible city by public transit, including the subway, regular trains, and express buses.

If you want the fastest option, the Mugunghwa or ITX-Saemaeul train is convenient; if you want to save on fare, Subway Line 1 is a good choice.

That said, train schedules and fares as well as express bus routes may vary by date and departure location, so I recommend checking the latest information on the Korail Talk app and Naver Map / Kakao Map before you leave.

🗓️ Recommended Day-Trip Course

Janganmun Gate → Suwon Hwaseong Fortress Wall Trail → Haenggung-dong Café → Hwaseong Haenggung Palace & Haengridan-gil → Dinner → Flying Suwon Night View

If you take it slow, plan for about 6–8 hours from afternoon into the evening.

👣 Stop 1 — Janganmun Gate & Suwon Hwaseong Fortress Wall Trail

📍 Around Jangan-dong, Paldal-gu, Suwon, Gyeonggi Province

I started my Suwon trip at Janganmun, the north gate of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress.

Janganmun is one of the fortress's iconic gates and pairs well with a walk along the adjacent wall trail. As you stroll atop the fortress wall, you'll come across a unique view where the old ramparts and modern downtown Suwon meet in a single frame.

The path is relatively well maintained and great for a light walk, but some sections have stairs and slopes, so comfortable shoes are a good idea.

The day I visited, the weather was clear, so my photos of the wall against the sky came out beautifully. If you want to truly feel the atmosphere of Suwon Hwaseong, I recommend walking at least part of the wall trail. 📸

☕ Stop 2 — Wooded Coffee, Haenggung Branch

📍 7-16, Jeongjo-ro 905beon-gil, Paldal-gu, Suwon, Gyeonggi Province (1st–2nd floor)

After the wall trail, I took a break at Wooded Coffee's Haenggung branch in Haenggung-dong.

It's a café with stylish interior design and a warm atmosphere, perfect for relaxing while gazing at the view outside. You can feel the distinctive artistic mood of Haenggung-dong, making it a great spot for anyone who loves taking photos.

I ordered watermelon juice, a vanilla latte, and pumpkin pie. Prices vary by menu, but drinks and desserts generally run around KRW 6,000–9,000.

Opening hours and menu items are subject to change, so I recommend checking the café's official social media or a map app before visiting.

🏯 Stop 3 — Hwaseong Haenggung Palace & Haengridan-gil

📍 825 Jeongjo-ro, Paldal-gu, Suwon, Gyeonggi Province

After resting at the café, I recommend exploring the nearby Hwaseong Haenggung Palace together with the alleys of Haenggung-dong.

Hwaseong Haenggung is where King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty stayed during his visits to Suwon Hwaseong, and it's a landmark historical site you shouldn't miss in Suwon. Strolling slowly through the spacious halls and courtyards helps you better understand the historical background behind the fortress's construction.

Around Hwaseong Haenggung is the so-called Haengridan-gil, lined with boutique shops, craft workshops, cafés, and restaurants. It's a great place to wander and browse or pick up souvenirs.

For dinner, you might enjoy fried chicken, Suwon galbi (grilled ribs), or Korean street food along Suwon's Fried Chicken Street or around Haenggung-dong.

🎈 Stop 4 — Flying Suwon Night View

📍 255-4, Ji-dong, Paldal-gu, Suwon, Gyeonggi Province

The final stop of my Suwon trip was Flying Suwon.

Unlike a typical hot-air balloon, Flying Suwon is a tethered helium balloon that rises along a cable anchored to the ground. When the weather is good, it ascends up to about 150 m, offering views over Suwon Hwaseong and the city.

At night, the illuminated balloon rises beyond the fortress walls, and even from a distance it looks like a giant moon floating in the night sky — quite a striking sight.

If you board it, you can take in the full view of Suwon Hwaseong from high up; even if you don't, you can capture night photos with Flying Suwon in the background from the surrounding wall trail and the Changnyongmun Gate area.

Do note that Flying Suwon may suspend operations depending on wind, rain, and other weather conditions. Operating hours and boarding fees (the official general fare is about KRW 24,000 for adults) are also subject to change, so be sure to check whether it's operating on the official website on the day of your visit.

🏨 If You Want to Stay Overnight — Four Points by Sheraton Suwon

📍 27, Hyowon-ro 307beon-gil, Paldal-gu, Suwon, Gyeonggi Province

If a day trip feels too short, or you'd like to enjoy Suwon's night views and restaurants at a more relaxed pace, Four Points by Sheraton Suwon is worth considering as a place to stay.

It's a hotel with modern, clean rooms and convenient access to Suwon City Hall Station and the Ingye-dong commercial area.

Keep in mind it's a bit of a distance from Suwon Hwaseong and Haenggung-dong, so factor travel time into your itinerary when planning.

✅ Helpful Things to Know Before Your Suwon Trip

The Suwon Hwaseong wall trail has stairs and uphill sections, so comfortable shoes are a good idea. In summer there's little shade along the wall, so bring a hat and water.

Haenggung-dong gets busy on weekend afternoons and parking can be limited. If you drive, check the location of public parking lots in advance — and using public transportation is a good alternative if possible.

Since Flying Suwon is heavily affected by weather, place it at the end of your course, and prepare a backup plan such as a night walk around Changnyongmun Gate or Suwon Hwaseong in case operations are canceled.

🌙 An Easy Getaway from Seoul: Suwon

Suwon turned out to be a city close to Seoul where you can enjoy a variety of experiences — fortress walls and a palace, charming alleys and cafés, and beautiful night views.

Walk the Suwon Hwaseong wall trail and take in the historic scenery during the day, explore the cafés and alleys of Haenggung-dong in the afternoon, and meet the night views of Flying Suwon and Suwon Hwaseong in the evening.
